These are videos that I like: Sloth Racket at Lume and Distorted Rectangle at Sakedelic Space Shuyukan

We’ve got two videos for you today, both from bands that will be featured in the latest This Is Jazz Today recommendations column hittin this site later today.

The first video is from the quintet Sloth Racket performing the song “Crossed Swords,” which is the opening track to their debut Triptych.  This April 2015 show went down at the London venue Lume.

Your video personnel:  Cath Roberts (baritone sax), Sam Andreae (tenor sax), Anton Hunter (guitar), Seth Bennett (bass) and Johnny Hunter (drums).

And if you don’t feel like waiting for today’s column and want to buy this album right now, you can scoop it up (and listen to more of it) at the artist’s Bandcamp page.

Akano Shibahito is a saxophonist out of Japan.  He’s in a free jazz quartet (two saxophonists; two drummers) called Avant-Garde Labor Union.  We’ll be covering their 2016 release Cosmic Tube and Infinite Skin later today.  This particular video appears to be from an outfit he belongs to called Distorted Rectangle.  I can’t find any information about the band, but this video appears to be from a 2016 performance at Sakedelic Space Shuyukan.  It definitely lands in the same territory as Avant-Garde Labor Union.  Nothing but fire.

And if you don’t feel like waiting for that column to post and just want to buy the album right now, you can scoop it up (and listen to more of it) at the artist’s Bandcamp page.
